128 Beats Per Minute

Diplo

128 Beats Per Minute: Diplo’s Guide to Music, Culture and Everything In Between is a coffee table book chronicling the infamous Philly DJ’s prolific world travelling in photo form. Featuring photography from Shaun McCauley and the occasional passage of autobiographical commentary from Diplo, it’s described as “a culmination of just some of the experiences [Diplo's] had so far”. From the previews that I’ve seen, it looks like it might be a decent browse. Books like this can be dangerous for me though, I flick through and end up halfway to the airport with a bag full of shit before realising I can barely afford a bus ticket.

If anybody fancies paying for me to travel around the world, get in touch. I’ll even wear a chicken suit and take degrading photos if you want. Or a bear suit.

Dreams – Bloodsport

Dreams

Part of his recent Flyte EP, which dropped on 6 Bit in March, ‘Bloodsport’ is an energetic yet darkly inflected track from LA producer Dreams. A stylish reimagining of the ’80s, it progresses with beautiful depth and adds an emotive element to all the neon clothes, extravagant haircuts and polished fitness videos that the decade produced. Featured in the Rustie essential mix I posted earlier today, it really stuck with me and is one of the few tracks that I individually picked out to listen to in its entirety. It also made me want to buy a white suit, a car phone and a wrap of cocaine that I would plan to snort off a stripper on a yacht in Miami. That’s what they did in the ’80s right?

Rustie’s Radio 1 Essential Mix

Rustie

Everyone’s favourite Glaswegian producer Rustie was this week’s Radio 1 essential mixer and last night at 1am, he dropped to hours of incredible tunes. Featuring new tracks from Dorian Concept, Hudson Mohawke, Surkin and Rustie himself, this one is big. Almost as big as my nose…oh God I’m hideous!

Have a listen over at the Radio 1 site or download from Mediafire. Tracklist after the jump.

Context – Drowning EP (Kid Smpl Remix)

Kid Smpl

Appearing on Context’s forthcoming Drowning EP, Seattle-based Kid Smpl’s remix of the title track is a chilled out yet profound experience. Heavily reverbed aspects of the original merge with vaporous atmospherics and sparing percussion, conveying the spacious and euphoric inclinations that so often characterise his music. As much as I like the original, the decision to subdue the auto-tuned chorus is intelligent and makes this mix a hell of a lot more listenable.

Drowning EP is out on April 22nd courtesy of Textured. Listen after the jump.

Benga – I Will Never Change

Filmed over seven days using 960 pieces of custom cut vinyl, the video for Benga’s ‘I Will Never Change’ depicts a beautifully realised waveform. Created by design and direction agency Us, which consists of Luke Taylor and Christopher Barrett, the finished product is like a more interesting version of the Soundcloud player. Yeah, even the new HTML5 one.

xxxy – I Know This (Can’t Be Love)

Taken from his forthcoming Everything EP, which drops on April 16th courtesy of Well Rounded, ‘I Know This (Can’t Be Love)’ is the latest offering from Manchester’s xxxy. Surfacing on Soundcloud earlier today, it was accompanied by a video featuring a bouquet of slowly wilting roses which eventually explode into flames. I know roses are perfectly suited to convey the powerful metaphor of fading love and the breakdown of a relationship, but I would have just microwaved a tin of beans until it burst. Now that would have bean entertaining. Bean.
